This course will provide an advanced overview of the contractualist tradition in moral and political theory, which uses the central ideal of an agreement to justify moral, social, and political norms. The course will survey both theory and applications of the theory to topics ranging from the non-identity problem to affirmative action. Readings will be drawn from philosophers such as Rawls, Scanlon, Hampton, Barry, Southwood, Parfit, and the instructor.
