Our department strives to create a warm and welcoming environment that is also intellectually serious. We offer a range of graduate activities and hope that students will regard the department as a home base.
Our Cogito Room and Reading Room are open to Philosophy students and offer a space in which to study or sit and relax quietly with friends. The Reading Room includes a sampling of contemporary journals in philosophy and a library table with ample plug-ins for electronics.

The Philosophy department is committed to building and maintaining a strong community in which everyone feels comfortable, safe, and supported, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, national origin, cultural or religious background, or physical handicap.
As one component of this project, the department has developed a statement of values. The statement is intended to make explicit some of the core values that we share as a community. These core values are expressed in the following general guidelines.
Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) is an international organization of students in English-speaking philosophy departments that aims to examine and address issues of minority participation in academic philosophy. Though primarily led by graduate students, MAP also relies on faculty support and encourages undergraduate participation. We have a chapter at IU.
MAP Mission
MAP’s mission is to remove barriers to participation in philosophy for members of marginalized groups. Through our graduate-student led network of autonomous chapters all over the world, we aim to stimulate discussion of diversity and inclusion in philosophy, build community among scholars from underrepresented groups, and shift the culture of academic philosophy in ways that improve working conditions for such scholars.
Through MAP’s network, students can exchange ideas on topics related to minorities and philosophy, meet and support peers, and learn from other philosophy departments. MAP chapters can choose to provide their respective departments with regular feedback on the department climate.
