His principal interests are in the history of ethics. He is interested in all aspects of the philosophies of Plato and Spinoza and, especially, Hegel and Nietzsche. He has twice served as president of the Indiana Philosophical Association. He was the departmental chair for a total of eleven and a half years. In 1998 he was a winner of the Pinnell Award for Distinguished Service to Indiana University, and in 2002 he was the recipient of IU's President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.
