While most of IU emerged from the pandemic some time ago, the Philosophy Department is emerging for a second time in just a few years. After the 2020 lockdown and the period of hybrid life, things were beginning to return to normal when it was announced that the Department had to vacate Sycamore Hall for renovations in summer and fall 2022. Back we went to working from home, Zoom meetings, and online office hours. Our wonderful staff and students saw us through, and it feels like a page is turning as we get settled back into the building.
Chair’s Welcome
This Department Newsletter is the first in many years, and a great deal has happened. New undergraduate and graduate student cohorts. More than a year of Philosophy Club and MAP (Minorities and Philosophy) meetings by Zoom. An Ethics Bowl team that made it to Nationals. A graduate student union drive, strike, and subsequent stipend increase. Prize-winning students, distinguished research contributions, and faculty honors. New faculty members, including Professors Matthew Adams, Sharon Berry, Vera Flocke, Katy Meadows, and David Sussman. Newly endowed student prizes, thanks to our generous donors. The unfortunate deaths of our colleagues Professor David McCarty, Emeritus Professor J. Michael Dunn, and Emeritus Professor Milton Fisk. A pandemic. It’s a lot to cover, and this newsletter offers just a sampling of what has been going on for IU Philosophy in recent years.
I hope that you enjoy reading about our activities. Maybe you’ll connect with some names you haven’t thought about for years or learn about new developments in Sycamore Hall. We always love hearing from our students, alums, and supporters. Our broader community is central to the IU Philosophy Department’s purpose, and we invite you to keep up with our activities and events. I hope you’ll stay in touch.
With very best wishes,
Adam Leite
Department Chair
