"Dogwhistles and Bullhorns: The Problem of Idealization in The Theory of Meaning" (Joint work by David Beaver and Jason Stanley)
Abstract: In this talk, we argue for a reorientation in the theory of meaning to center political uses of language as data. Broadening the uses of speech to be considered as evidence in philosophy of language leads us to a reformulation of central concepts of the theory of meaning, which allow for a better understanding of the nature and purpose of speech. If there is time, we draw some consequences for topics such as presupposition, accommodation, slurs and dog whistles.
