Department of Philosophy

My research centers on the intersection of the philosophy of mind and epistemology in the early modern period. I am interested in early modern theories of cognition and perception and their application to questions concerning our ability to know. My current research focuses on the role of conceptual skepticism—skepticism concerning intelligibility rather than epistemic justification—in Hume. The project focuses on the ways in which Hume’s thinking about the limitations of our conceptual capacities contributes to his skepticism. I have other ongoing projects concerning Hume’s theory of causation and his account of the belief in body. In addition to my work on Hume, I have published essays on Leibniz’s philosophy of perception and Locke’s theory of ideas. I am also interested in the broader role of skepticism in early modern philosophy.
