We are proud of our students, especially our BA graduates old and new who have made significant contributions through their careers or who have recently gone on to law school, medical school, graduate programs, or entered the work world. And we are proud of our excellent graduate students and their significant contributions to teaching and research (including in some of the best venues in the field), as well as of our recent PhDs, who continue to excel in a tough academic job market and who are increasingly finding creative ways to turn high-level philosophical training into satisfying careers outside of academia.
This is a moment of significant change for the IU Philosophy Department. Three long-time members of the department retired at the end of 2025: Rudy Professor Marcia Baron, Halls Chair Professor Allen Wood, and Professor Rega Wood. We are grateful for their numerous important contributions to the department over many years, and we wish them all the best in retirement. We are also delighted to welcome Assistant Professor Calum McNamara to the department. Calum specializes in decision theory, metaphysics, epistemology, and the use of technical and formal tools in philosophical research. He received his PhD in 2024 from the University of Michigan and comes to us after a post-doc at Yale University. In addition to embarking on an impressive publication record, he is leading creation of our new course on ethical issues in artificial intelligence. It will be taught for the first time in fall 2027.
The larger IU philosophy community plays a huge role in enabling us to continue to provide a wonderful educational experience for the next generation of students. We are thankful to our donors who so generously fund our activities, from major public lectures to graduate fellowships to faculty research and more. And we are always on the lookout for alums with inspiring career stories or who might like to share their wisdom and experience with students.
The department has an extensive event calendar every year, with many events online. You can keep abreast of our news and events here.
Keep in touch!
Best wishes,
Adam Leite
